Yes. I did. I attended the Quidditch World Cup. For those who aren't familiar, Quidditch is the magical sport played by Harry Potter. Unfortunetly we muggles (regular humans) cannot fly on brooms, so we must use the power of our legs to help us get through the game. This year, the Quidditch World Cup was held in NYC. High School and College teams from all over the U.S. and the world (yes, the world) attended the games. Being a huge Harry Potter fan, I had to attend.
In this game of Quidditch, teams need to catch the golden snitch, which is only worth 30 points. In the books, catching the snitch ends the game and the team who catches it is awarded 150 points. The golden snitch in muggle Quidditch is a person who runs around in yellow with a ball dangling from their back. Seekers need to grab this ball to end the game. It is a difficult task since the snitch can run around anywhere, can attack the seeker, and look for ways to disguise themselves. One snitch even climbed the fence around the park.
So this is Quidditch right? It's not in a magical world, so how dangerous can it really get? Well, don't be fooled. The moment I walked into the park, a person was already being carried into a stretcher. These games are rough- literally. The game is played with dodgeball and rugby skills. Players become intense and tackle their opponents.
The guy above was the first person to create a Quidditch team at his College.
Middlebury College has won the Quidditch World Cup for the past five years I believe, and they can add another year because they won against Tufts University this year.
IS ANYONE ELSE AS EXCITED AS I AM FOR THE SEVENTH HARRY POTTER MOVIE?!?!?
